Welcome to Empower version 5.6.2 We would like to thank you for selecting and purchasing Empower, the World's most advanced Macintosh security product available today, and for tomorrow as we are always working on enhancements. Every effort has been made to ensure the reliability of Empower. However, due to the complexity of the configurations available today, it is impossible to test every combination of hardware and software. Please remember that as new Macintosh Operating Systems and hardware are introduced, a new version of Empower may be required for system and hardware compatibility. Therefore, make sure you have a reliable backup of your files before you use Empower. Thoroughly check the compatibility between Empower and your configuration, and take backups regularly. When entering names and passwords, check your Caps Lock key. Names and passwords are case sensitive. 2. To register as a different user, you can use the "control-r" key to bring up the registration dialog without launching the Administrator application. 3. To manually lock the screen when you leave your desk, use the "control-l" keys. 4. When you install Empower Pro, guest access is ON per default. To disable guest access launch the Administrator, and uncheck the "Allow guests to register" check box in the Volume Access Privileges section. 5. If three attempts to get the password right is too few (or too many), you can change the allowed number in the Volume Access Privileges section. 6. After you set up your Empower configuration, we recommend that you export a personal configuration file by choosing "Save AsÉ" from the file menu. 7. A disk need not be unprotected, but it must be unlocked before you use any disk repair utility. This version requires System 7 or newer If you are installing this version on a volume protected by a version of Empower prior to 5.0, you must release the protection before installing. Please follow the procedure described below. If this version is installed on volumes protected by a version of Empower prior to 5.0, a message will be displayed at startup and your new software will not work. Installation First check Empower Pro's webs site for the latest version. The installer will create a folder called "Empower Pro Folder" on your desktop (or where ever you select), where it will install related files. Installing Empower for the first time: 1. Restart your computer, holding down the "SHIFT" key to disable all System Extensions at startup. 2. Double click on the Installer icon and follow the instructions. Upgrading From Earlier Versions Upgrading from versions of Empower 5.0 and later: If you wish to retain your current Configuration Preferences, you may elect to save these as a Personal Configuration File or as a Customized Configuration File. Please check your User Guide for procedures. As Administrator or Supervisor with access to the "Protect/Unprotect" feature: 1. Open the Empower application and unprotect ALL volumes that have been protected with Empower. Unprotect will also Unlock a "Locked" volume. 2. Quit the Empower application. 3. Remove (drag to Trash) all Empower files: - Empower (client) from the Extensions folder in the System folder. - Magna Preferences from the Preferences folder in the System folder. - Empower (application) from the Magna folder. 4. Restart your Mac, holding down the "SHIFT" key to disable all extensions at startup. 5. Insert the copy of your new Empower Program floppy disk, double click on the Installer icon, and follow the instructions. Make sure that you have released or Unprotected all volumes that you want to have Empower installed on. After that, if you are having problems installing your Empower upgrade, there still may be two additional invisible Empower prep files located at the root directory level of any volume where Empower was previously installed. Using ResEdit or Norton Disk Editor, make the Empower Prep and/or Empower Startup files visible and remove (trash) them. Go back to step 5 and install the new version of Empower. Upgrading from all versions of Empower prior to Version 5.0 1. Open the Empower Control Panel 2. Click the ADMINISTRATOR button 3. Click the RELEASE button 4. Click on the RELEASE button again. 5. If you have other Empower protected volumes, click the DRIVE button and return to step three. Otherwise, proceed to the next step 6. Close the Empower Control Panel. Drag the Empower Control Panel to the Trash. Empty the Trash. 7. Insert your new Empower floppy disk, double click on the Installer icon, and follow the instructions 8. Restart your Macintosh 9. Type in your Administrator name and password and configure Empower for your specific needs. You must enter a valid name and password before the Password button will work; this protects you against someone else trying to change your password. Three attempts to use the Password button incorrectly will delay registration, just as if you had entered the wrong password three times. Contacting Empower Pro Empower Pro 1999 So.
